According to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, the creation of a 5G network in the capital will begin in 2022.
“The comfort on the streets of Moscow is not limited to the physical environment. In parallel, we have deployed an extensive free Wi-Fi network and starting next year, the city will begin to build a 5G network together with cellular operators, which opens up fundamentally new opportunities for the provision of digital services," the Mayor said at the "Russia Forum: Driving the Future" as part of Expo-2020 in Dubai.
At the end of May, the mayor of the capital announced the start of testing the fifth-generation communication technology in the Moscow metro. The details of the project were not disclosed at that time.
In July, the State Commission for Radio Frequencies rejected the application of the Rostelecom for obtaining frequencies of 3.4-3.8 GHz for testing 5G in the metro. However, in October, Forbes reported that the government was discussing the issue of transferring the 3.4-3.8 GHz range for the deployment of 5G networks by cellular operators in Moscow.
