In Moscow, an electronic passport of a citizen in a pilot project may appear before December 1, 2021. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, it is planned to carry out legal and technical preparatory work by this time.

It is assumed that the electronic passport, together with a mobile application complementing it, will provide citizens with a qualified electronic signature and "will become the key to public and commercial services."

The new passport will be a plastic card with an electronic data carrier of domestic production. It will contain the information contained in a valid paper passport. In this case, the basic information about the citizen will be marked on the plastic card itself.

The system project of the infrastructure for registration, issuance and use of a passport with an electronic carrier is being developed by the Ministry of Digital Development of the Russian Federation.
