Specialists of Bauman Moscow State Technical University have created Teragraph — a new supercomputer. Experts of the Ministry of Education and Science say that it is the world’s first microprocessor and supercomputer in which the DISC (Discrete Mathematics Instruction Set computer) set of commands is implemented at the hardware level.

The supercomputer is capable of processing ultra-large graphs of up to 1 trillion vertices (1012). It was created for storing and processing ultra-large graphs and will be used to model biological systems, analyze financial flows in real time and for other tasks.

The supercomputer is based on the Leonhard microprocessor, which contains 24 specialized heterogeneous DISC Lnh64 cores. Experts say that it “takes on the part of computing load that general-purpose arithmetic microprocessors (for example, Intel or ARM) or graphics accelerators do not handle well.”

Experts also add that the microprocessor takes up 200 times less chip resources than one microprocessor of the Intel Xeon family, and consumes 10 times less power. The clock speed is about 200 MHz. “This is achieved through parallelism in the processing of complex data models, which makes it possible to process up to 120 million graph vertices per second,” the specialists of the Ministry of Education and Science explained.
