The Ministry of Internal Affairs has prepared a digital transformation plan, according to which artificial intelligence will be used to detect signs of serial crimes. The project plan for the implementation of AI was presented by the agency at a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko.

Kommersant notes that, according to the roadmap, in 2020 the Ministry of Internal Affairs will begin preparing technical specifications for conducting research work on the implementation of AI technologies in police activities, and in 2023 it will start research and development work for creating specific software to search for serial criminals and “identify the individual anatomical features of a person obtained from biological material from the crime scene”.

According to Aleksey Tsishevski, COO at Handl.ai (a company operating in the Russian and American markets), foreign law enforcement agencies have long demonstrated interest in AI-based technologies. “About three years ago, we received several requests to develop a technology for detecting movement when a person draws a weapon. They were interested in such technologies for protection purposes, for example, for American schools”, - he says. The expert confirms that computer vision technology can be used in forensic science to visually compare the biomaterials left at the crime scene with the biological material of suspects.
