The World Intellectual Property Organization has released a global innovation index containing the results of a comparative analysis of the innovation systems of 132 countries and their ranking by the level of innovative development.

In the final rating, Russia took 45th place out of 132, having climbed two steps over the year. Adjusted for modifications in the practice of rating formation over a five-year horizon, Russia's positions are stable and vary in the range from 45th to 47th place.

The improvement of Russia's position in the overall rating is facilitated by:

  • Human capital and science (29th place in the ranking): higher education (14), including the number of university graduates in scientific and engineering specialties (13).
  • Higher education coverage (18) and positions of Russian universities in the QS ranking (21).
  • Business development (44): the number of people employed in knowledge-intensive industries (18); number of employed women with advanced degrees (10); payments for the use of intellectual property (23).
  • The level of market development (61): a composite indicator - trade, competition and market scale (17), but primarily the scale of the domestic market (6).
  • Development of technologies and the knowledge economy is a composite indicator of results innovation activity (48): the number of patent applications for inventions (15) and for utility models (10) filed by national applicants with the country's patent offices; citation index.
