In the 2021 Tech Cities of the Future ranking, Moscow took14th place among 76 European cities, moving up four positions and leaving behind Frankfurt am Main, Warsaw, Vilnius, Milan, and others.

To create a shortlist for fDi x TNW Tech Cities of the Future 2021, the fDi Intelligence division of the Financial Times collected data using the specialist online FDI tools fDi Benchmark and fDi Markets, as well as other sources.

Data was collected for 76 locations across Europe, under five categories: Economic Potential, Innovation & Attractiveness, FDI Performance, Cost Effectiveness and Start-up Environment.

Locations scored up to a maximum of 10 points for each data point, weighted by importance to the FDI decision-making process to compile the subcategory rankings. In addition, surveys were collected under a sixth category, FDI Strategy, for which there were 32 submissions.

Locations that ranked in the top 20 in this category were given bonus points, contributing to their overall score. Together, the data subcategory rankings and the FDI Strategy ranking make up the overall fDi and TNW Tech Cities of the Future 2021 ranking.

The Lomonosov Cluster of the Vorobyovy Gory Innovation Science and Technology Center of Moscow State University will start operation in 2022. Five companies have already have been granted the resident status. These companies are:

One of the solutions developed by the specialists of the center is Geoportal, which ensures the monitoring of hydrometeorological and ice conditions using artificial intelligence algorithms;</li>
 <li><a href="https://www.mor-center.ru/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Morskoy Tsentr (Marine Center LLC)</a>, the specialists of which create equipment for environmental monitoring of the marine and coastal environment;</li>
 <li><a href="http://www.nanoscopy.ru/company/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">NPP Tsentr Perspektivnyh Tekhnologiy (Scientific and Production Enterprise ‘Center for Advanced Technologies’ LLC)</a>, which develops an original nanometer resolution technology and manufactures microscopes;</li>
 <li><a href="https://white-product.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">White Innovation LLC (White Innovation LLC; White Product Group)</a> producing localized immunochromatographic test systems and developing an IT platform to increase the availability of laboratory diagnostics;</li>
 <li><a href="https://inwave.ru/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Mikrovolnovaya Elektronika (Microwave Electronics LLC; Inwave)</a>, the specialists of which develop radio electronics, including antenna and test and measuring equipment.</li>
</ul>

 
 In total, more than 180 companies are interested in becoming a resident. According to the plans, the Lomonosov Cluster will be filled with resident companies by the end of the year.

HSE University and Sberbank presented an <a href="https://ict.moscow/research/proryvnye-innovatsii-chelovek-2-0/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">overview</a> of technologies that will have the greatest impact on human life (the document was prepared in January). These technologies include:

 <li>assistive technologies; the size of the Russian market in 2020 was estimated at $528-792 million (40-60 billion rubles), the global market will grow to $31.5 billion by 2027;</li>
 <li>autonomous vehicles; according to the forecasts, the Russian market will amount to $4 billion by 2030, and the global market will be estimated at $557 billion by 2026;</li>
 <li>neurotechnologies; the Russian market in 2024 can be valued at $106 million (8 billion rubles), while the global market can be estimated at $15 billion;</li>
 <li>cybersecurity technologies; in 2021, the Russian market was estimated at $1,3 billion 9(8.6 billion rubles), the global market will be estimated at $276 billion by 2025;</li>
 <li>augmented intelligence technologies; the Russian AI solutions market in 2019 amounted to $139 million, the global market will be estimated at $554.3 billion by 2024;</li>
 <li>AR/VR/MR technologies; in 2020, the Russian AR/VR market was valued at $18.5 million (1.4 billion rubles), the global AR market will amount to $340 billion by 2028.</li>

AI, Neurotechnologies, AR/VR Included in the Breakthrough Technologies of the Future

Participants of two streams of the Moscow startup development program StartHub.Moscow have raised $12.4 million (more than one billion rubles) for the development of their projects. Fintech startups attracted the biggest investments, accounting for 43% of the funds raised. Startups in the fields of human resource management, transport and logistics have drawn much attention as well.

 
 Moscow-based companies received most of the funding (70%) from various founds, while 12% came from private investors, and another 12% were given in the form of grants. Russian fintech service Joys was one of the most successful graduates of the program. The funds raised by the service amounted to $5.1 million (418 million rubles). Joys is followed by Skipp service, which has raised $2.7 million (218 million rubles). Ubirator platform has raised $855,800 (69 million rubles).

Participants of Two Streams of StartHub.Moscow Program Raise $12.4 Million

The Government of Moscow allocated $2.44 million (200 million rubles) to test innovative products. Tech companies and startups developing or releasing new products, technologies or software will be able to receive state aid.

 
 60 sites of the city’s infrastructure will be provided for the tests. These sites include 24 healthcare and social service organizations, 12 cultural and recreational organizations, 4 educational institutions, and also technology parks, organizations in the housing and utilities sector and transport sector.

 The exit of large foreign companies and the high demand for Russian information security solutions can become a driver for the development of the industry. This opinion was expressed the Skolkovo Foundation on the basis of the survey conducted as part of the Security Startup Welcome Day.

 
 Startups that planned to work with Western markets are ready to reorient towards the Russian and Asian markets. About 72% plan to develop business in Russia. They are also ready to attract investments from sanctioned companies.

 
 The majority (90%) of developers surveyed in the industry said they had faced a talent shortage problem. Another 56% mentioned a shortage of qualified personnel. At the same time, almost a third of companies mentioned the emergence of unemployed staff due to Western companies’ exit.

 
 According to the <a href="https://www.rbc.ru/technology_and_media/26/01/2022/61effbfe9a79479830c8c236" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">survey</a> conducted by HeadHunter, the number of vacancies for information security specialists increased by almost 50% in 2021. 	<li>Organizations engaged in telecommunications and IT are strengthening their positions in innovative markets - in 2018 the production of products based on new and improved technologies exceeded the level of the previous year by 12.4% and amounted to 138.6 billion rubles ($1.8 billion).</li>
