MIPT scientists are developing a technological solution to connect 5G mobile networks to satellite infrastructure. This will allow provision of 5G communication services in hard-to-reach areas such as a remote mine, gas field, or another facility without data exchange infrastructure.
In remote areas, where it is impossible or economically unviable to install terrestrial communication lines, “a satellite gateway (communication channel) that makes it possible to connect the base station to the mainland to send all the necessary data will be used”, says Roman Zhukov, head of the 5G department at the Telecommunications Research and Development Center of MIPT. The station will have an antenna system, a modem that generates a signal, and a unit for working with terrestrial transmission channels.
The development of the computer appliance to connect 5G networks to satellites will be completed before the commercial use of the 5G communications begins in Russia. MIPT scientists plan to test the solution within the pilot 5G research network on premises of the institute in Dolgoprudny. The development of the satellite gateway will take about two years, according to the forecasts of experts.
