MIPT engineers are creating a Russian central satellite communications earth station. The project is supposed to replace imported equipment that provides telephone and internet communications.

At the first stage, engineers will focus on creating high-performance modems. They are necessary for receiving information and transmitting it using satellites. The specialists of the institute say that these devices are one of the key elements for the equipment of the central station. Now MIPT specialists have ready-made models of these devices, and they plan to assemble a fully operative sample by the end of 2023. Engineers will also have to specify suitable algorithms for the operation of modem software.

After that, the specialists of MIPT will create multi-user equipment. According to the experts, it will be possible to build a completely independent satellite communications network on its basis. MIPT plans to use its own satellite communications station to test the developed products and solutions.

Russian satellite communications operators say they are ready to switch over to Russian equipment. The specialists of MegaFon say that the company uses the platform of a foreign manufacturer to provide satellite communications. “Such platforms have been changed many times, so we have sufficient experience in switching to other solutions, and we are ready to cooperate with Russian manufacturers,” the operator’s spokesperson said.

The specialists of RTCOMM say that they are ready to integrate Russian equipment as soon as it is put into commercial operation and becomes available on the market. MTS clarifies that the company does not use its own multi-service platforms and leases channels from third-party satellite operators. The representatives of Tele2 say that the operator does not have satellite communications.
