The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed some of the shortcomings of major cities in timesof crisis. As the world searches for ways to make urban areas more resilient, smart city initiatives offer some of the answers.

The importance of urban development is supported by forecasts from various sources. By 2050, 68% of the world's population (approximately 6.7 billion people) are likely to live in urban centers. The global smart cities market by 2025 may grow to $2.6 billion.

Among European cities with the most developed technological infrastructure, Moscow ranks 9th, ahead of Berlin and Paris.
