In 2020, the Global Innovation Index (GII) presented its 13th edition dedicated to the theme Who Will Finance Innovation? This edition sheds light on the state of innovation financing by investigating the evolution of financing mechanisms for entrepreneurs and other innovators, and by pointing to progress and remaining challenges—including in the context of the economic slowdown induced by the COVID-19 crisis.

Moscow was ranked 32nd, rising one position compared with the previous year. Since 2017 Moscow has improved by 25 positions in the ranking. The compilers of the ranking analyzed the number of patent applications and the number of scientific publications, which are reflected for each cluster in the databases of the World Intellectual Property Organization and the Web of Science. Moscow has 2060 patents and 58153 publications in these databases.
