Digital Control System for Snow Removal and Disposal

description:

The project is based on an automated measuring complex - a contactless measurement system that uses 3D scanning and profiling technologies to calculate the amount of snow as it comes into a snow melting station.

In winter snow is removed from the streets of the city and taken to such stations. License plate numbers of arriving trucks are recognized by control cameras installed at the entrance. Then the dome camera distinguishes the vehicles and their position in space and prevents incorrect scanning if the truck is in the wrong place. In this case, the driver is given instructions via traffic lights and an LED display.

Drivers tap their cards on the reading device to start the scanning procedure. A laser sensor forms an array of spatial coordinates on the basis of which the control unit of the measuring device forms a three-dimensional model of the cargo area and the load. Smart algorithms analyze the data and speed up the measurement process. After the scanning process the truck dumps the snow, and the entire scanning procedure is repeated with the empty truck bed. The system compares the data of two measurements and determines the amount of snow dumped. The results of all measurements are sent to the city’s information systems and are available for further analysis.

The system operates in any weather conditions, has an uninterruptible power source and can work offline for up to four hours. Data from the system is transmitted through the built-in antenna. Streams from cameras are recorded in the cloud storage, which can be accessed through the interface of the video surveillance system.

key indicators:
  • The project was launched in 2020
  • 74 measuring complexes were introduced at 48 snow melting stations
  • More than 25,000 dump truck license plates were recognized
  • More than 18 million cubic meters of snow were scanned
  • Transparency of spending was ensured; the system saved up to 30% of the budget for snow removal
