Universal Library Card

description:

The universal library card is a personal identifier that is accepted in all libraries of the Department of Culture of Moscow. The card allows Moscow residents to use all libraries of the city without having to register in each of them separately.

From December 2021, the universal library card can be issued on the mos.ru portal. The universal library card can be issued in the form of a plastic card with a barcode and a 13-digit unique number. The Muscovite’s card can also be used as a library card: the librarian will link it to the reader’s profile in the unified automated library information system.

In August 2021, Moscow residents who have the universal library card got the opportunity to use its electronic version. The barcode with the card number is displayed in the reader’s personal account in the ‘Moscow Libraries’ service - the user just shows it to the librarian on the smartphone screen to get a book.

In April 2021, the 'Moscow Libraries' service was launched on mos.ru to search for and reserve books online. With its help, the owners of universal library cards can find out which libraries have the necessary titles, reserve them online and extend the reservation period of the item online.

key indicators:
  • Launch date: December 2018
  • 440 libraries of the Department of Culture of Moscow accept the universal library card
  • More than 715,000 library cards have been issued for Muscovites (of which 22,000 were issued online)
  • More than 95,000 books have been reserved through the ‘Moscow Libraries’ service
  • More than 268,000 users visited the service
